Te Motu is one of the oldest wineries on Waiheke, established in 1988 by the Dunleavy family, Terry Dunleavy and two of his sons, John and Paul. They purchased 30 acres of land in Onetangi Valley and set out to produce the finest Bordeaux style wines possible. They cleared the land, planting 15 acres by hand and harvested their first vintage in 1993. Joined in 2012 by Master of Wine, Sam Harrop, as a consultant and part investor their philosophy as winemakers is to hand craft wines that express the unique terroir of Onetangi Valley and will continue to evolve and improve with age. With this in mind, their top cuvée, Te Motu, is a classic, Cabernet Sauvignon dominant Bordeaux blend, only produced in the very best vintages, typically aged for at least 5 years in bottle before release and will continue to develop and improve for years to come.
Complementing the flagship Te Motu are the Kokoro and The Strip Bordeaux blends. Both of these wines offer a Merlot dominant, full bodied, fruit forward richness for earlier drinking paired with robust tannin structure that allows for evolution with age. Also produced is The Grafter, an elegant and complex Syrah.
Te Motu Kokora 2012, Bob Campbell 94 1/2 points, Te Motu ‘Tipua’ Waiheke Island 2013 Raymond Chan 5 stars, Dunleavy ‘The Strip’ 2013, Bob Campbell 95 points
