The Hay Paddock

Chris Canning and Bryan Mogridge chose Syrah clones sourced from the Hermitage region - predominantly from the highly prized vineyards of the Chave family - when establishing their 12-acre single variety vineyard in the Onetangi Valley.

Waiheke Island of Wine
With 15,000 vines sourced from Rhone Valley clones this vineyard is dedicated to growing New Zealand's finest Syrah
Chris was an early pioneer of premium varietals in New Zealand planting Cabernet, Merlot and Chardonnay in 1976. Bryan led New Zealand's largest producer, Montana Wines, to its position of pre-eminence in the 1980s and 1990s and was for many years the President of the NZ Wine Institute. Their Waiheke Island vineyard is dedicated to producing New Zealand's finest Syrah and is a member of The Specialist Winegrowers of New Zealand.

The Hay Paddock is managed under a low-cropping regime that involves intensive canopy management and low yields. Vinification includes small-batch blending and extended oak ageing with the aim of producing elegant, intensely flavoured wines. Vintage years will only be declared when the season and fruit quality reach the required standards. The first vintage to be released was the 2006 which won the Trophy for Best Shiraz/Syrah at the 2010 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition. The 2007 vintage was judged Best in Class (Gold) at the 2010 London IWSC. Awarded 5 Stars by Michael Cooper's NZ Wine Guide.

The Hay Paddock is a limited edition collectible wine aged for up to three years before release and capable of being cellared for up to ten years under cork. Available in 6-bottle cellar packs and magnums.

The Hay Paddock Harvest Man Syrah is aged for two years before release and bottled under screw cap for drinking within two to six years. The 2007 vintage won Gold Medal at the London International Wine Challenge 2009 and was selected as Wine of The Year in the 2009 'Best of The Best' wine guide and awarded 5 Stars by Michael Cooper's NZ Wine Guide.
