Peacock Sky Vineyard comprises almost three hectares of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc and Malbec.
Located in the centre of Waiheke Island on an elevated site with expansive views west across the Hauraki Gulf towards Auckland City, the vineyard is bordered by lush native bush and rolling pastoral land. It is also home to a large colony of 'wild' peacocks whose exotic calls are a distinctive feature of this spectacular site.
The vineyard was first established in 1999 and the first vintage was bottled in 2002. The original owners set their sights on producing the very best Bordeaux-style wine for which New Zealand - and particularly Waiheke Island - is famous.
The newly renamed Peacock Sky Vineyard is now operating under the ownership of Connie Festa and Rob Meredith. The new owners are expanding the product range (the 2009 vintage selection includes a Rosé and a Chardonnay) but have also been careful to preserve the long standing philosophy of sustainable viticulture, with minimal use of horticultural sprays. As before, each of the 6,500 plants has an intimate relationship with the owners and much care is lavished on them! All pruning, trimming, tucking and picking operations are conducted entirely by hand.
Excitement is growing with the launch of the new brand- indications are that the harvest from this boutique vineyard will reflect the attention to detail and "pursuit of excellence" strategy that has been adopted, and that Peacock Sky will produce some exceptional premium wines.
