Miro Vineyard was established in 1993 on a spectacularly steep hill in the Onetangi Basin of Waiheke Island. The site was chosen because of its north facing slopes which give maximum exposure of every vine to the sun, and because of the outstanding 'Bordeaux' qualities of the handful of existing Waiheke Island wines. The vineyard is managed as part of the first New Zealand trial of Sustainable Viticulture techniques, a system which produces high quality wines with the minimum impacts on the farming environment and the environment surrounding the vineyard.
New Zealand, like most of the winegrowing world, has the phyloxera aphid in the soil, and all vines are grafted onto resistant North American rootstock. Miro vineyard comprises Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc. and these have been planted on the steepest parts of Miro Vineyard was established in 1993 on a spectacularly steep hill in the Onetangi Basin of Waiheke Island.
